We had a chit-chat some time ago with Daniel Abayomi, a product designer at Meta, and we wanted to know what the difference was between graphic design and product design. At the end of the conversation this is what we could deduce;

Basically, graphic design and product design are similar but serve different functions, so what does that mean?

Graphic design focuses more on awareness of a brand or awareness of an event. It bridges the gap between customers and the company. In doing so questions like this arise; Who are we? What do we want our customers to know about us? What brand awareness campaigns are we focusing on?

Although graphic design is elaborate and there are elements of graphic design in product design like typography, colors, spacing, etc. But, what really distinguishes graphic design from product design is the psychological aspect of it.

Product design focuses more on making a product easy for people to use but for graphic design customers are not necessarily using your end product. When it comes to product design you are building something that people will use every day, so it’s not just about them seeing or feeling the brand but they actually want to use your solution.

Now, we know the difference between graphic design and product design but what more does Daniel have to say on other aspects of product design? You can click here, to listen to the recorded podcast session with him.
